Open Doorbells

Reverting the direction of intercom pranks to interfere with routine and bring outside what’s usually inside.

I first played with this idea and medium in 2015, when FAI - the Italian National Trust - supported the production of a series of doorbell performances throughout Northern Italy.

I either performed live or improvised with pre-recorded sample cues, depending on the building’s intercom options.
The script brought to life characters and situations from the specific building’s own history.

The following video, titled “Open Doorbells”, documents some of the performances, and has since been used by FAI to promote their public-access open doors days.
