Errors

Niccolo' Moronato

Errors, 2016, algorithm on paper on bricks.

This is the only memory of the beautiful sticker artworks of the Varesine, a historic neighborhood of Milan that no longer exists.
Varesine was bulldozed in 2011 to make room for a skyscraper speculation project.

This is a layering of errors, ultimately producing a thing of beauty, therefore questioning the positive or negative value society gives to mistakes.

Error #1: an illegal act of art, unauthorized, on a public wall.
x
Error #2
: failing to protect that wall and its neighborhood from speculation.

x

Error #3: Google's algorithm mistaking the drawing for a person, therefore censoring its face.

x

Error #4: Google StreetView time bug, showing a 2008 picture in a 2016 mapping.

=

Result: a new work of unintentional, unauthorized collaborative art, where the original artwork and its context only exist in a radically transformed version.

This is the only relic of the Varesine sticker art works, a historic district of Milan that no longer exists, razed in 2011 to make room for the hotel of a new semi-private "district".

This rétrouvé is a work of layering of errors - actual or presumed.

A timewarp of Google streetview and its overly zealous privacy algorithm have temporarily made the intervention emerge as a fundamentally modified new work that will return in the form of projection and performance as soon as the hotel's construction is completed.
